On Saturday, March 19th I bore witness to The Nude Party’s performance at the St. Pat’s in Five Points festival. Going into the concert, I was vaguely familiar with the band. I had heard about three of their songs beforehand & played a handful of their songs during my sets, but I didn’t consider myself a die-hard fan of theirs until I got the privilege of watching them rock the venue. All the musicians that make up The Nude Party are prolific in their trade, and together they have written songs that sound strangely familiar yet are all extremely unique.

I found my first real sources of creative inspiration and confidence from female musicians. From secretly downloading a Lady Gaga album (The Fame) onto my iPod nano in 2008, or carefully selecting No Doubt and ABBA CDs out of my parent’s collections, music was something I could discover without permission (or needing to ask if I could leave the house first.)

In this series, we feature CDs from our very own music library reviewed by DJs past and present. This week's feature is former local band Grey Egg with their 2007 album release Indoor Ski. Rest assured, the four-piece was not just another indie band. They're original and avant-garde, once self-dubbed as, "that sweet spot between Schnittke and your mother's lullabies." There is also some incredible throat chanting on this. Listen to the album for yourself here and let us know in the comments if you agree with this DJ's review!

Our Local DJ Mary Local, whose show focuses on South Carolina artists, had the chance to interview the local band Bull Street Garage. Bull Street Garage is the baddest band in town! They are a jam-rock band from Columbia, South Carolina. The five members (Parker Lubin, Josh Bilbaum, Joe DiGregio, Doug Neubauer, and Jack Barrett) just released their debut self-titled album, which features rock, funk, and reggae vibes. Their gripping guitar solos and rocking vocals are really what pull you in! They were so sweet to sit down with Mary Local this past Wednesday to talk about themselves, their album, and what's next for Bull Street Garage!

It’s finally here! If you are anything like me, you’ve been excitedly waiting for Chappell Roan her latest pop banger, "Naked in Manhattan." The song perfectly captures what it can be like to be a young queer woman experiencing a romantic relationship for the first time. This song is the perfect follow-up to "Pink Pony Club", a similarly upbeat anthem for queer identity. Both songs talk about how it feels to deal with the newness of your queer identity when it becomes to be realized.

This playlist for my show northern exposure (every Friday from 8 - 10 am) was made with the idea that it was the soundtrack for your classic romantic comedy. I decided this imaginary film would be titled, Love At Second Sight, the story of college friends Julia and Teddy who reconnect and fall in love, just after Julia has broken up with a boyfriend and decided that she must be single for a year in order to grow. In identifying the composition of songs I wanted to use, I thought it would be nice to have a mix of newer and older releases. I also pulled from my collection of favorite songs about love, crushes and heartbreak.

I know this season is slightly controversial for some, but love is still real people! And you don’t need a partner to know it. Some of these songs are for people, others for careers, activities, pets, or even just life. Some are passionate and energizing, others soft and slow. There are many ways to love, and many things to love. So I hope you love something today! Check out my playlist below!
