As the weather gets warmer, birds start chirping and pollen starts to form, it’s clear that spring has sprung. With this beautiful weather, what else do you need to make the most of this busy season? Some feel-good songs, of course! Whether you’re sunbathing on the horseshoe, taking a walk downtown, studying for exams or just doing some spring cleaning, here are some songs I feel are perfect to get you in the right mood.
1. "ALIEN" by LAUNDRY DAY
First up is “ALIEN” by LAUNDRY DAY. I first discovered this song while scrolling on TikTok and was instantly addicted to the one-minute snippet they posted. It made it even worse when I saw them live in concert for another artist later on this list and they didn't perform this song, even after teasing it for three months.
An upbeat drum groove, dynamic guitar chords and an earworm of a melody make this song perfect for driving your friends around town with the windows down, blasting music and singing your heart out.
2. "Psyche" by vi0let, Kaisha
Need a song to dance to while you clean your place? “Psyche” by vi0let (featuring Kaisha) has the perfect amount of flow and bounce to get you pumped and bobbing your head to the beat. Reminiscent of Kaytranada’s mix of R&B and electronic pop, I can’t help but move my body whenever this song comes on shuffle. A deep bass and dreamy vocals make this song an easy listen. It’s definitely already made its way into my Spotify Wrapped for this year.
Growing up, I always woke up every Sunday to the sound of R&B and the smell of cleaning products, but the electronic aspect of this song makes it perfect for getting ready to go dancing and clubbing on the weekends.
3. "Photo ID (with Dominic Fike)" by Remi Wolf
If you were on TikTok during the peak of quarantine, you’ve definitely heard this song, or at least its outro. This song just screams spring/summer to me. Its groovy bass line, high-energy instrumentals and fun guitar riffs make me think of going to the beach, skating around and being a dumb teenager with my friends back in high school. It's the perfect song for lying in a hammock around campus or skating downtown with some friends.
4. "West Coast Love" by Emotional Oranges
Even though we’re on the east coast, this song is a laid-back gem I can’t get enough of. It instantly takes me back to movies of my childhood like "Boyz n the Hood", "Love & Basketball", and "ATL", especially with lyrics like
“Saw you in the backyard baby
With the barbecue blazing on a Saturday, yeah
House party jumping so loud”
I’d listen to this song sitting on top of my car late at night having parked-car convos, studying or poolside with some friends.
If you’ve ever tuned into my show, "The Commute" from 9-10 AM on Sundays (shameless plug) you’ve definitely heard this on the airwaves.
5. "Bleed (feat. Omar Apollo)" by Malcolm Todd, Omar Apollo
And finally, but certainly not least, is the wholesome rockstar himself, Malcolm Todd. This artist has taken the internet by storm in the past year and I’m definitely no exception. Electrifying guitar riffs, a driving beat and dreamy vocal production make this a song you'll want to keep coming back to.
Seeing this song live in concert with my friends was an experience I’ll never forget. Not to glaze too much, but this song is suitable for any time, place and situation. Whether you’re studying, at a party with friends or just cleaning the house, you’ll find yourself singing, "How my heart bleeds”!
