Everyone has different preferences for the music they listen to on repeat. For me, it’s reggae—no matter the time of year. Whether it’s snowing outside or I’m outside on the beach, I find myself drawn to this genre because of its calming, feel-good vibe that is almost nostalgic. Even in college, without my car, reggae and pop music are my go-tos. Back home, it’s easily my favorite music to play while driving, especially since I spend so much time outside and working at a boat marina. With that said, my music taste does shift a bit each season. Around November and throughout December, I shift to Christmas music daily—a genre that’s completely different from what I usually listen to. During that time, artists like Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin are constantly playing, marking the start of the holiday season.
Outside of the holidays, however, my core taste stays consistent. I listen to artists like Stick Figure and Bob Marley year-round. I fully believe Bob Marley is one of the best artists to ever exist. Whenever "Satisfy My Soul" or "Three Little Birds" play, I’m instantly in a good mood. His music has a way of instantly putting me at ease.
One of my hot takes is that rap music is not my favorite. I wish I enjoyed it more, especially since it’s so popular among people in my generation, but I’ve always preferred slower, more mellow sounds. On the other hand, country music is another genre I enjoy, though I see it as having two distinct styles: traditional country and pop-influenced country. I tend to prefer country music that has more of a pop music element, such as the Zac Brown Band, whose music blends country, pop and southern rock. I even went to one of their concerts a few years ago with my family-friends and loved it.
Overall, I appreciate a wide range of music, and I believe that someone’s music taste can reveal a lot about someone’s personality. Music plays a major role in my daily life; I start my mornings with it while getting ready, listen as I walk to class and incorporate it into multiple parts of my day. Being involved in radio and discovering new artists throughout college has been a fun experience and it’s something I’ve truly enjoyed.
