As fall finally begins to set in, I wanted to take a moment to spotlight my favorite artist discovery of the summer: Negative 25. In a matter of months, this talented duo has skyrocketed into my top three artists of all time.
Negative 25 makes music that perfectly balances elements of pop-punk, electronica, and hip-hop styles. They boldly address topics like mental health, family, fame, and love in their music, often drawing inspiration from their shared experiences as brothers. While they create a relatively unique, refreshing sound, I would compare them closely with Waterparks and Set It Off. This up-and-coming duo from Nashville, TN consisting of Brett and Bradley Anderson only has one twenty-five-song album out currently, but I wholeheartedly believe that they have a very promising future.
I came across Negative 25 one day while browsing a forum of recommended artists and was immediately captivated by their song “ARE WE HAVING FUN YET?” This song in particular has an infectious beat that energizes with every listen. It was one of the few songs I would loop to prepare myself to go to work over the summer, along with “LIGHTS OFF,” which is another one of my favorite Negative 25 songs. “LIGHTS OFF” similarly has a strong beat and catchy chorus, with a bridge that is potentially even more memorable to top it all off. To complete a list of my top five songs by this band in no particular order, I would add “so what i lied,” “Die?!,” and “Brutal,” though this is by no means an exhaustive list of great Negative 25 songs.
Negative 25 is the first artist I’ve liked this much this quickly in about four years. The last artist I found that I instantly liked so much was Waterparks, who eventually became my favorite artist for multiple years. I can absolutely see Negative 25 following a similar route as they release more music, but only time will tell.
For now, I know that Negative 25 is a highly underrated band with so much potential, and I can’t wait to see where they will go.
