I found my first real sources of creative inspiration and confidence from female musicians. From secretly downloading a Lady Gaga album (The Fame) onto my iPod nano in 2008, or carefully selecting No Doubt and ABBA CDs out of my parent’s collections, music was something I could discover without permission (or needing to ask if I could leave the house first.)

I know this season is slightly controversial for some, but love is still real people! And you don’t need a partner to know it. Some of these songs are for people, others for careers, activities, pets, or even just life. Some are passionate and energizing, others soft and slow. There are many ways to love, and many things to love. So I hope you love something today! Check out my playlist below!

Local musician & senior entertainment management major Cammi Boon has spent the last few months putting together a music festival along with other musically-driven USC students. In addition to production, Boon is also performing at the festival this Thursday with the locally known "Best Band Below Blossom" Bull Street Garage. The Philadelphia native has been dabbling in all things music since middle school, from touring across the country at 18, singing both covers and originals alike, and putting on music productions in her hometown. WUSC DJ Groove Girl sat down with Boon to talk about the upcoming 2nd annual Colaroo fest and who Boon is as an artist.

Bands that are able to be both stark oxymorons and close complements, in two different genre worlds, yet simultaneously able to mesh together like puzzle pieces, are hard to find. This is exactly what I was thinking going into a concert with the bands Mannequin Pussy and Japanese Breakfast.

One of the absolute best feelings in the world is when you find that bright red ruby in that sea of otherwise generic songs. The minute the guitar strums a certain note, or the harmonies come together to form some sort of chord birthed from the god Apollo, that certain feeling arrives and for a few minutes I find myself submerged in a glittering pool of musical euphoria. As a DJ, these times aren’t necessarily rare, but the magnitude changes each time. One of the artists that provides me with a massive 1,000 magnitude earthquake of sound euphoria each time I hear a song is an indie rock band called Her’s.

Music is practically the most fit example of subjectivity, and I think that’s one of the best things about it. Different ears can hear the same music and create such distinct and personalized meanings within them. In a song where I feel some edgy form of teenage sadness, someone else might feel inexplicable joy. It’s that kind of funny little oxymoron in meaning that makes music feel so alive, personal, and moving.

Clipping. is not just for people looking for a musical experience. They’re for those looking for a new, niche, and fervent state of mind. Their sound has been described as abrasive, and that’s not too far from true. In an interview with Purple Sneakers, front man Daveed Diggs even said, ‘I’m surprised anyone likes what we do to be honest with you [laughs]. It’s not the easiest listening in the world.”

A spirited conglomeration of indie, punk rock, and art pop; Ezra Furman is a hidden gem in the world of music, slowly emerging into the limelight they so rightfully deserve. Every album they have produced is personal, raw, and tortured in its own way. This is music that stands apart.
