The Playlist of an Inquisitive Primate

Jack Johnson was born on May 18, 1975, and raised on the north shore of Oahu, Hawaii. He spent his childhood surfing, becoming the youngest person to make it to the Pipeline Masters finals, one of the most prestigious surfing events in Hawaii. This unfortunately ended in a trip to the hospital where Johnson had his head stitched up and teeth removed. Though tragic, this experience fostered Johnson's other childhood hobby, playing the guitar, and ultimately inspiring his song “Drink The Water” on his debut album. Luckily for all of us, he stuck with music.

Johnson is known for his acoustic guitar talents and laid-back, therapeutic voice, singing about real life experiences which everyone can relate to. His unique style of surf rock feels like a breath of fresh air in a world that daily smothers you. Take his song, "Banana Pancakes" for example; Johnson stresses the importance of slowing down and appreciating our lives. “We got everything we need right here and everything we need is enough”.

Although expressed in different ways, his songs "Better Together" and "Good People" discuss the importance of being kind and loving to others, encouraging community. Other songs are simply therapeutic and relatable for personal problems. I consider "Sitting, Waiting, Wishing" a top-tier yearning song, especially with the lyrics, “Lord knows that I'm not you, and if I was I wouldn't be so cruel, 'cause waiting on love ain't so easy to do”. Then, take his most recognizable song, "Upside Down", featured in the opening credits of the 2006 "Curious George" movie. This song encourages childlike wonder and of course, curiosity! It is an important message to kids and adults alike to not let the world hold you down, reminding listeners they can make their life whatever they want it to be. As it goes, “I'll find the things they say just can't be found, I'll share this love I find with everyone.”

But beyond the good messages of community, love and curiosity, what has Johnson done to tangibly contribute to the real world? Well, I'm glad you asked. Johnson is extremely passionate about his charity endeavors. In 2003, he founded the Kokua Hawaii Foundation, a pro-environment organization that teaches kids to be environmentally conscious and adopt green habits, a cause for which he has been a relentless advocate, writings songs like "The Horizon Has Been Defeated". A few years later, in 2008, he created the Johnson Ohana Charitable Foundation, supporting organizations that focus on environmental programs, as well as art and music education. Additionally, the singer donated $50,000 to a Japanese disaster relief fund, and another $50,000 to Hurricane Sandy relief, money which he raised through personal contributions, fundraising tours and music releases.

Johnson is not only an incredibly talented artist, able to serenade anyone who is lucky enough to have his music grace their ears. Moreover, Johnson's music promotes the importance of love and appreciation for the world and people around you. Next time you get the chance, throw on an album or two of his and never forget that we truly are always "Better Together".
