Aaron J. Burke, based out of Greenville, South Carolina, released his latest album, Young Pier Jumpers, on November 17, 2023. All instruments were played, recorded, and mixed by Aaron, save for the ‘Word of Love’ section on “Flutes of Engagement,” where Reuben Knights(who also released TWO fantastic albums this year) plays lead guitar, drums, and bass. The record was mastered by Jay Matheson of Jam Room fame. You may know Aaron through his work in the local post-punk/art punk band, Gláss, where he plays guitar and was on vocals. Lori, the guitarist for Ruth in the Bardo at the time, as well as being one of my favorite people and a musical mentor, showed me Gláss. I was blown away. In 2020 when the world shut down, they released their third full-length album Wilting in Mauve. It was probably the bleakest yet most emotional album I’ve listened to locally at the time. The structure and genre-hopping the band does from shoegaze to post-punk to free-jazz and back again while still shattering my soul just completely set the bar at a new high. I went around telling people Gláss was the best band to come out of South Carolina. Sadly, Gláss still is on a very long hiatus but they are working on a solo album that will hopefully be released soon. Months passed, and my bandleader, Zac, sent a gig proposal to our band chat asking if we were available to play on 1/13 with Aaron Burke. I had no idea who he was. After Zac followed it up with “he’s the lead singer of Gláss, legendary Greenville band,” I was taken aback, and extremely excited about the opportunity to work with him. Aaron contacted me to let me know his solo album was complete and asked if I would like to hear it. Duh. Of course I did.

2022 was a rough year for music. Too many fantastic musicians passed- Pharoah Sanders, Angelo Badalamenti, Mimi Parker, Takeoff, Coolio, Vangelis, Meat Loaf, George Crumb, Klaus Schulze, Jaimie Branch, Jeremiah Green, and more. However, their music will always be there. It’s their life after death. Their proof walking on this Earth and experiencing everything it has to offer. Many of them live on in the artist of today, influencing the sound that came after them. Many of their protegees producing some of the albums you see here. Some fantastic albums were released this year. In the rap world, billy woods and Cities Aviv both dropped two albums this year that should easily be on any “Best of 2022.” Beyonce and SZA both finally dropped! (You won’t find their albums on this list, unfortunately. Yes, I listened to them, they were fine.) Of course, my opinion serves the same purpose as my article from last year. This is solely my favorite albums from this past year. Albums that I either couldn’t stop listening to, or just left me thinking, “Oh wow, awesome, awesome, how did they do that?” So, here’s some of the albums that commemorated my 2022.

They Are Gutting a Body of Water return three years to the day to follow up on their cyberpunk and claustrophobic 2019 album Destiny XL. Doug Dulgarian solidifies the band members with the always fantastic drummer Ben Opatut, partner and bassist Emily Lofing, and PJ Carrol on lead guitar. Doug and co. eschew the abrasive fear of technology heard throughout Destiny XL with a lighter, playful sound inspired by two years inside playing Mario. Rather than the largely sample-based experimental soundbites that served as interludes in their previous effort, TAGABOW integrate longer-form, hypnotic, and mesmerizing escapes that remind you of the best videogame soundtracks from your childhood, just with a bit more distortion and reverb.

Early Friday morning, on April Fools, Duster released their fourth official album under the band’s name, Together. They formed officially in 1996, but Clay Parton and Canaan Dove Amber formed their chemistry in the post-hardcore band Mohinder in 1993. They released the seminal 1998 album Stratosphere, which has aged incredibly well and is an example of an album that has never been replicated but often imitated. Following several EPs with new member Jason Albertini, the band released Contemporary Movement, which brought Duster down to Earth, with more attention to songwriting than experimental noise-making, but still sounded uniquely and singularly Duster.

2021 has been a wonderful year for music, and I’m excited to share some of my discoveries that have made me break down weeping, have had me singing at the top of my lungs driving in the car with my eyes closed, have had me rushing to open GarageBand to try and recreate the sounds and spaces that filled my headphones seconds earlier, and much more.

New Brookland Tavern had probably its best light show, and noise bands, I’ve seen this year with the Nothing performance on Dec. 9th, as the band winds down their 2021 segment of the tour. In tow were the bands Midwife and Bambara. I unfortunately missed Midwife, who I was looking forward to seeing most, but I had a friend who works at the venue tell me that it was a great set, which is all you need to know in order to make the decision to see them when they visit Columbia again. You can listen to Midwife AKA Madeline Johnston here.

MJ Lenderman is the secret ingredient to many music review websites’ new favorite band, Wednesday, from Asheville, NC. His backing vocals on “Billboard” and “November” made them my favorite songs on their 2020 release, and helped make their latest release, Twin Plagues, one of the best albums of 2021.
